Ermoupoli, the capital & port of Syros
Capital of the island and administrative capital of all Cyclades. It is one of the most beautiful Greek towns (with 12,000 inhabitants), full of wonderful neoclassical buildings, of a distinct architecture, influenced by the western standards of the 19th century. The city is built amphitheatrically on the hill, overlooking the Aegean and was named after the god Mercury, it was densely populated and developed into an important commercial and industrial center of the time, while due to the geographical position of the island and the economic boom it experienced, the 19th c. its port became the most important commercial and shipping center of the newly established Greek state.
